All homework, updates, materials, and other items needed to be successful in this class can be found here. Please check this Wiki periodically to see when new information appears. This is, additionally, a good resource for finding homework and assignments that you miss when absent.

Homework:
September 21: Nihil.
September 20: Choose new derivatives from the list you received in class to fill out a derivative chart. NOTE: I have added some study resources at the bottom of this page, which might be helpful.

September 19: "Our Roman family" worksheet (students will have to translate a series of sentences related to the Roman family from our text).

September 18: Make flashcards for the new vocabulary (the vocabulary can be found below in the "Other Important Information" section).

September 14: Study for the vocabulary quiz. Practice one of the vocabulary drills discussed earlier in class.

September 13: Translation worksheet. Using the vocabulary you were introduced to this week translate a series of sentences and then practice making your own.


September 12: Make flashcards for this week's vocabulary.

September 11: Exercise 3.1 worksheet.


September 8: Romulus and Remus worksheet ("Exercise 2.3").


September 7: Nihil.

September 6: Noun activity ("Exercise 2.1" worksheet) to reinforce today's discussion.


September 5: Nihil (None). I will still be assigning homework this week but less so that you may devote more time to your extended homework assignment (see below). Use this as an opportunity to work on that.

September 1: Find instances of references to the Olympian gods in your lives.
This assignment will be due September 8.

Instructions:

Ask yourselves where you have seen references to the gods and goddesses in your lives. For one week pay attention to how many references to mythology (Greek or Roman) you come across. You can/should look for businesses, advertisements, events, books, movies or music. I've provided some examples here: Nike shoes, websites (Amazon), the Percy Jackson book series, restaurants (one student told me about a restaurant in Bethesda with the god Bacchus in its name), types of cars (Honda Odyssey), etc. You can use references that you come across in your normal routine (e.g. traveling between school and home) or you can use references that you look up. Your assignment is to identify at least 4 references.

I would like this to be a fun activity - it should not be viewed as a stressful project. It is not. It is an extended homework assignment - just a few minutes a day will do. As for what format I would like it in, I think a running list would be easiest and perhaps best. But, I have had some students already ask me about single-page long narrative versions, describing the 4 or more things they found, and photo logs, of statues and store names they have seen. All are permissible. What your homework must have though, regardless of format, is: the item (store, brand, statue, place, advertisement, etc.) and what mythological story/character it is referencing.

I will be counting this as several homework assignments, to account for your extra effort.

August 31: CANCELLED. In class today, we did not finish an important PowerPoint that I wanted to review before everyone attempted the homework. As a result, I have decided to cancel the original worksheet ("Olympians and Beyond") that I had assigned. We will do that in class tomorrow after we finish the PowerPoint we started today and in place of reviewing the previous night's homework.



August 30: Prepare and fill out a "Derivative Tree" for a root you did not use in class earlier.


August 29: Complete the worksheet on Latin roots and English derivatives (entitled "Exercise 1.2").


August 28: Complete the worksheet entitled "Exercise 1.1". You will be prompted to use the conversational Latin we have reviewed for the last several days (it may be helpful to have the copy of the vocabulary chart you prepared in class on hand). As a note, questions 4 and 5 ask that you to respond in English. You may use your current hometown (example: Washington, D.C.) and the current year (2017) for the answers. It is also permissible to use one of the geographic locations that were introduced in class today as an answer to number 4.
