WEEK OF 3/2/2015

Monday: Pick two possible topics about India that you would like to research. For each topic, brainstorm as many questions as you can think of and write them down. This should be completed on the directions/brainstorming sheet that is attached below.
  • There is an example of a quality 5th grade informational report that students can review as well.
  • I encourage all students to start visiting the neighborhood library to gather books and other resources for their report. Sometimes, finding materials is the hardest part! (I do have 25+ Books checked out on India in my classroom)



Tuesday: Fill out your first general outline. Organize your questions by subtopic.
Wednesday: Bring in a resource you can use to take notes. A book, printouts of a website, links you can search, etc.

Due Thursday: Students should do a little research on what a HERO or HEROINE is. What type of characteristics and qualities do they have? What do the definitions say? After looking at all this information write one paragraph (5 or more sentences) defining what you think a hero/heroine is.

Due Friday: Read Chapter 5 in The Breadwinner. As students read chapter 5 they should decide if Parvana has demonstrated on of the six characteristics of a hero that we talked about in class (courage, accomplishment, selfless, for the greater good, moral, positive) and explain how it shows these characteristics. Fill this information in on the chart handed out in class today.

This shows that Parvana was willing to run an errand to the Kabul Market place that she does not want to do. The only reason she does it is because her older sister, Nooria, and younger siblings, Ali and Maryam, have no food left to eat. She does this for her family not herself even though she is afraid of the Taliban.

Due on Thursday: Students should practice their map skills using the worksheet they got in class. This is practice. It will not be graded. They should focus on the following countries: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia. They do not need to complete the entire worksheet!

All students have the option of making corrections if they would like. This should be done in complete sentences on a piece of loose-leaf paper. Map corrections can be made by printing a new map and completing the map activity again. Corrections should be turned in to Mr. Burke within 10 school days (2 weeks). Questions? Come to tutorial!

Due on Friday: Continue working on your summary of "The Egypt Girls." Use the chart we filled out in class to help write your summary. The summary should be written on the back of the chart and put in your brads in your geography folder. This is due on Monday.

Due on Monday: Study for your quiz on Wednesday! Make sure you know and can do the following...

    • Sahara Desert, Nile River, Amazon River,The Himalaya Mts., Andes Mts., Rocky Mts.
  • The four layers of the Earth
  • Tectonic Plate Theory
  • Subduction, Transform, Uplift (and what each plate movement results in)
  • Largest Volcanic Eruption in the world?
  • Physical Maps vs Political Maps
  • Be able to look at map know what the map is showing!
  • If The World Were a Village- Most populated countries in the world, most spoken language, electricity, income, possessions, clear air, access to clean water.
  • Connection between water, food, education, electricity, income, and sanitation

Due on Friday: Add 2 more questions to your worksheet under the section "What do you want to learn about Egypt?" and add 2 things that you learned about Egypt today under the "Things you learned about Egypt!" section. The worksheet should be in your red geography folder. If you need another one, please download it from the wiki above (K-W-L Egypt.docx).


WEEK OF 9-8-2014

Due on Monday: Please finish labeling and coloring your political map at home. You only need to color and label the countries that are listed on the directions. This is due on Monday. Directions and map are below! Atlases are available for you to take home if you need. If you have extra time, color 5 countries that you want to visit in your life! Color these

countries red.



Due on Tuesday: Without looking at a map, sketch a map of the world. This should be completed on page 2 of your composition notebook (this is the page that you taped a blank sheet of white copy paper). Label anything that you know be heart (countries, cities, landforms). Coloring is optional.

Due on Wednesday: Please finish your journal entry about your trip to the "Global Village." Students should complete this on page 7 of their composition notebook.
If you use more than one page it is OK!

Due on Thursday: Please finish any classwork that you did not complete in class. For example, students that went to tables #2 and #6 should ONLY complete sections 2 and 6 in their packet. Students that went to tables #1 and #4 should ONLY complete section 1 and 4 in their packet. Please write in complete sentences.

Due on Friday: Review your vocabulary, maps, notes and worksheets you have completed in class. Spend 15 minutes studying!

Week of 09-01-2014

Due on Monday: NO SCHOOL!

Due on Tuesday: Write a journal entry about what you did in world geography class this week. You should write this on page 5 in your composition journal. Here are some things to think* about:
  • What did you learn?
  • What did you enjoy most about class? Why?
  • What did you like least about class? Why didn't you like it.
  • What questions did you not a get a chance a to ask?
  • Explain one thing you learned in detail.
*You do not need to answer all these questions. These are just questions to think about!\

Due on Wednesday: Review your notes, vocabulary, and maps from last week. 15 minutes.

Due on Thursday: Which type of map is the most important, physical or political? Why? Write a one paragraph response on page 6 in your red composition notebook.

Due on Friday: Physical map of the world. Should be colored and labeled.

Due on Monday: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
Due on Tuesday: Review the World Geography syllabus
Due on Wednesday: Cut out the continents from your world map. You should have 6 landmasses. Europe and Asia are one landmass. Rearrange the landmasses to create what you think PANGAEA looked like and glue/tape them down to a blank piece of white paper. Please do not look on the web to find a picture. How do you think the continents moved?

Due on Thursday: Study a world map. Be able to locate the 7 continents and 4 oceans
Due on Friday: On page 3 of your geography composition notebook, please answer the following questions in complete sentences using geography language and vocabulary. How are mountains formed? Why do earthquakes happen? Why do Volcanoes erupt? Explain in your own words.
