ASTRA Math: Ms. Oran (Thursday - Friday)

Quarter 1

Students will be working on using mathematical modeling, story-telling, and questioning to develop a deeper understanding of math concepts. Students will also review grade-level content through lesson starters to support their current math class.

Students will review 512 Ants on Sullivan street to discuss patterns and multiplicative comparison. We will relate these topics to place value and estimation.

5th graders will be working on decimal place value, as well as rounding to the nearest hundred. The activity will focus on comparing and ordering the weights of animals at the zoo :)




6th graders will be working on academic support work for both their math and Civics classes this week!
Additionally, 6th graders will be revisiting positive and negative integer awareness.
October 5 and October 6
Students will be working on a grade-level review through a game called Balloon Pop!


October 12th and October 13th
Students will be creating their own math abacus (using marshmallows, Cheerios, and toothpicks!) and using it to discuss/analyze place value in a variety of situations.

Students are reviewing area and perimeter (6th) or powers of ten and place value with multi-digit whole numbers to work on past material while supporting what students are working on in their grade level courses.
Students will be completing review notes and then completing task cards through a math game!


October 19th and October 20th
Students will be reviewing long division and division word problems while discussing equal grouping.



On Friday, students will be reading the One Hundred Hungry Ants and making multiplicative comparisons of the grouping the ants. Afterwards, students will be making a variety of arrays to represent a number through real life word problems!

November 2nd

November 16th and November 17th
Students in 5th grade ASTRA will be working on key words and word problems/substitution in real world scenarios.

Students in 6th grade ASTRA will be working on standard algorithm multiplication and area model model, along with furthering their understanding of place value and base ten.




January 11th and 12th
5th grade students will review exponents, exponent operations, and square roots through a game of jeopardy!
6th grade students will review evaluating expressions using the order of operations involving more complex operations.
January 18th and January 19th


January 25th and January 26th
Students will be working on an individualized online math intervention on Thursday. On Friday, students will do a deep-dive into equivalent fractions while analyzing the work of others. This lesson is designed to be done with a group so that students will be able to collaborate and justify their thinking to others.

February 8th and 9th
On Thursday, students in 5th and 6th grade ASTRA worked on the online intervention program, DreamBox.
On Friday, 5th grades continued their work on equivalent fractions - reducing and converting between fractions greater than one and mixed numbers. They did an activity in pairs and were able to "compete" against each other while also collaborating to ensure joint success. 6th graders worked on ratio and proportions and through this standard, practice multi-digit multiplication, as well as long division. Additionally, students worked on pulling information out of a word problem and creating a plan to solve a word problem.
February 15th and 16th
On Thursday, students in 5th and 6th grade will work on ASTRA, an online math intervention program.
On Friday, classes will work on differentiating key terms in word problems in instructionally appropriate word problems. These will be a combination of word problems involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Additionally, some students will work on their conceptual understanding of division as equal groups.

March 2nd and 3rd

On Friday, students will be working on base ten operations - multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. Students will finish up the lesson by working with decimals when multiplying or dividing by powers of ten.
March 8th
On Thursday, students in 5th and 6th grade will work on Dreambox, an online math intervention program.
Students will engage in an activity designed to support executive functioning and organization.
March 15th and 16th
On Thursday, students in 5th and 6th grade will work on Dreambox, an online math intervention program.
On Friday, students will be working on base ten operations - multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. Students will finish up the lesson by working with decimals when multiplying or dividing by powers of ten. (Due to the weather-related school closure on March 3rd, students will be completing the lesson that was designed for this day.)
